Malta is the best country to visit if you’re into diving. Surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, Malta’s waters are clear, clean and beautiful, making diving in Malta a surreal experience. They’re not just pretty to look at during the winter months or amazing to swim in during the summertime, but they’re great for diving simply because of how diverse our marine life is.

But why dive in Malta? Firstly, we have so many diving schools that you can start a program with. After completing your training, you can get certified to dive. Or, you can just try it for fun as a one-off too!

Underwater, there’s also a visibility of up to 40 meters, which is perfect for those who want to explore wrecks and take photos. Not only do we have plenty of shipwrecks, but there are so many more cool dive sites like caves, reefs and tunnels. Here are a few locations we suggest you check out!

Diving in Malta - Blue Hole

1. Blue Hole, Gozo

The Blue Hole, located in San Lawrenz (Gozo), is a natural hole in the rock which formed over centuries due to wind and wave erosion. This underwater archway offers divers a surreal and photogenic setting, where you can see a variety of marine species! Some of them include moray eels, groupers, lobsters, and schools of fish. The main dive reaches depths up to 15 meters, which is great for recreational divers. But if you’re an advanced diver, you can even reach depths exceeding 50 meters.

2. Inland Sea, Gozo

The Inland Sea is just a stone’s throw away from the Blue Hole! The Inland Sea is a lagoon separated from the open sea due to cliffs. A narrow natural arch, or tunnel, is about 80 meters in length, connecting the lagoon to the sea. Not only can you explore the lagoon and the tunnel, but also the open water and the surrounding cliffs. The area is rich in biodiversity, with sightings of species such as groupers, moray eels, nudibranchs, and octopuses.

3. Um El Faroud, Malta

This Libyan-owned oil tanker was originally used for transporting fuel between Italy and Libya, but in 1995, it suffered a gas explosion during maintenance in Malta’s dry docks, which led to nine shipyard workers dying. The ship could not be repaired, so it became an artificial reef and diving attraction. Located approximately 150 meters off the shore of Wied iz-Zurrieq, its max depth is 36 meters, and you should be PADI Advanced Open Water certified before doing this dive. People from all over the world visit Malta to check out this diving site!

Kids Parties - Hangry's

And there are so many more diving sites to check out! Malta is full of them, like the P29 Patrol Boat at Cirkewwa or the Santa Maria Caves in Comino. After a day diving in Malta, feeling so tired and exhausted, you might as well stop by The Eden to unwind and have a delicious meal at Hangry’s restaurant! Or, sip on some cocktails and share some appetisers at Amber Terrace Bar for a more relaxed setting. The Eden is the perfect place to loosen up after a day underwater!
