Hiking Trails in Malta - Girgenti

1. Girgenti Country Trail

Starting at Buskett Gardens, this trail takes you through lush greenery and centuries-old landmarks. In total, this whole trail should take you two hours and it isn’t difficult!

Before setting off, take some time to explore the gardens, originally planted by the Knights of Malta in the 16th century. Following the green-marked trail, you’ll come across small caves and the massive Ghar Il-Kbir cave.

As you continue, enjoy the panoramic views of Girgenti Valley, where you can spot Girgenti Palace, the Prime Minister’s official residence. The route eventually leads to Verdala Palace before dipping into the countryside, where you’ll pass by fields, farmers, and sheep. It’s a great way to experience Malta’s rural charm.

2. Mdina Trail

Mdina, the island’s former capital, is a fortified city with medieval charm. This two-hour hike takes you through its narrow streets, past historical landmarks like St. Nicholas Church and Bastion Square, before leading you outside the city walls and into the open countryside.

The trail takes you towards the village of Siggiewi and eventually up into Rabat, offering beautiful valley views along the way. With a mix of history and nature, this hike is a must for those looking to explore Malta’s past while enjoying its landscapes.

3. Dingli Cliffs Walk

Dingli Cliffs, the highest point in Malta, offers breathtaking views over the island and the sea beyond. While not an extreme hike, it requires more effort because of the uphill areas. The route begins at a roadside before quickly leading to the cliffs, where you’ll need to navigate the rocky landscape.
Once you reach the top, you’ll find the ancient Hagar Qim temple, a UNESCO-listed site dating back to 3600 BC. The hike ends at the stunning Blue Grotto, a series of sea caves with high cliffs against the blue sea. The views make this hike so worth the challenge!

4. Marfa Watchtowers Route

Starting at Ghadira Beach, this hike offers a mix of coastal and countryside views. The trail takes you up into the wooded Marfa Ridge, where you’ll pass through olive groves, small chapels, and religious statues. As you descend into the sandy bay, you’ll spot historic defence towers from the 1600s.
The final stretch is an uphill climb to the iconic Red Tower. If you time it right, you can catch a spectacular sunset here. In total, this hike is moderately difficult and it should take you four hours.

5. Zurrieq Loop

One of the easiest hikes on the island, the Zurrieq Loop starts at the central bus stop in Zurrieq and leads you through charming streets lined with historic buildings before transitioning into the countryside. You’ll pass through Triq Il-Mithna Mill Street, where you can see four old windmills and other artefacts from Malta’s past.

This easy two-hour trail continues through the peaceful village of Safi, where you’ll then loop back to Zurrieq. Along the way, you’ll pass by Xarolla Windmill, the only fully functional windmill in Malta, which is open to visitors on weekends.
